SEAL has been awarded a contract by Nagra to review published modelling studies of cement-clay interactions and to describe implications for the design of the EBS and tunnels for a deep repository for HLW/SF in Switzerland.


SEAL has been successful in its bids to provide expert geochemical support to the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) for the review of geochemical aspects of the SR-PSU safety assessment regarding the expansion of SKB’s repository for ILW/LLW (‘SFR’) at Forsmark, Sweden.


SEAL has been awarded a contract by Nagra to evaluate the safety-relevant consequences of chemical aspects of interactions of engineered and natural barriers for repositories in Opalinus Clay and marl.


SEAL has been successful in its bid to provide expert geochemical support to the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) for the review and assessment of the construction licence application from Posiva for a Finnish KBS-3 repository for spent nuclear fuel planned at Olkiluoto.


David Savage gave a keynote talk entitled ‘Prospects for Coupled Modelling’ at the biennial ‘Clays in Natural and Engineered Barriers for Radioactive Waste Confinement’ meeting in Montpellier, France.


The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) will review the licence application from SKB for the construction of a geological repository for spent nuclear fuel at Forsmark, Sweden.  SEAL has been awarded contracts for all three of its bids:

  1. chemical and erosional processes within buffer and backfill

  2. physical properties of the buffer and backfill

  3. groundwater chemistry
